Do You Understand the Words that Are Coming Out of My Mouth?

A certain person, who shall remain nameless, has been known to impishly respond to “Make a Difference” with “everyone makes a difference. What difference do you want to make”.

And it gets at the heart of why I hate jargon and catch phrases. Once they are used by people other than the originator of the thought, they have less heart and meaning than a can of New Coke. Its like substituting a plot of land for a CAD drawing. People use business self-help jargon when they are at loss at what it truly means or how to expand on the concept with an original thought.

IBM has this wonderful commercial out that has been running during the US Open. A group of office workers attend a speakers conference and play a game of “Buzzword Bingo”. They each get a bingo card, and instead of numbers are phrases like “think outside the box” and “make a difference”. It’s a hilarious campaign. Their new slogan is “stop talking. start doing.”
