My New Friend

I just made a very cool new friend who just finished a book about the history of New York speakeasys. How damn fascinating and cool is that? Maybe the Auntie Carrie parties will make it into the follow-up. That is, as long as she does not mention the name of the party, the attendees or the location. And certainly not the “bat signal”. Anyway – I can’t wait for the book and to promote it to my friends. This past Thursday night, I met up with friends for cocktails at La Esquina. It’s a speakeasy but with a neon sign. The woman at the door left a bad taste in my mouth. The “hidden New York” theme is really on the upswing but I think I will cease and desist from calling places like La Esquina a speakeasy. Speakeasy’s do not have websites. They do not need advertising. Speakeasys do not allow a NYU student wearing last year’s skinny jean to decide who enters and who does not. That’s not subversive. That’s just your average restaurant in New York.

Don’t get me wrong, I really do like La Esquina. We just need a new label.
