The Auntie Movie of the Year… Akeelah!

In the category for movie of the year, the 2007 Auntie goes to “Akeelah and the Bee”. Although we saw plenty of excellent movies this year, this movie struck a cord for several reasons. It is well directed, beautifully shot and centers around an adorable young black girl with plenty of sass and a gift for words. I know it sounds very After School Special, but watch the film. It has this certain something – you know its corny but you are still 100% invested in her winning. I went to see the film with a very gruff black man. He talks big, can throw his weight around. And yep – he cried. The film is that good. Plus, Mark Cuban and Lawrence Fishburne were producers, who are definitely Super Star Hustlers in my book. AND Starbucks put up money and resources for the marketing and distribution. We hope now that “Akeelah and the Bee” has won an Auntie for Movie of the Year, more fascinating, complex films about black folks, who are not pimps or hoes, will receive the same sort of financial and creative support. Cue music. Spontaneous standing ovation. Fade to commercial.
